A patron came into looking for a book on how to build a secret compartment into furniture. Not an easy thing to find. Along with the wonderful reference librarians at the Central Library, I was able to find the subject heading 'hiding places -- design and construction' but this was mostly about building a secret room.
And then someone mentioned the 'How to Do it Index'. Amazing! This clunky old directory has listings of articles on a million different how-to subjects. The list I found was under 'hidden compartments' and gave the patron about 10 articles. It's only a citation but it was the only thing we were able to find and it was perfect.
I will definately be using this index again

i love it when i can find something unique and difficult to find for a patron! nice teamwork with the CEN librarians!! sn
Thank goodness for the CEN librarians! Makes me nervous to think about having to be the CEN librarian. Bucks stops with me? Oy.
i think CEN librarians are 85% attitude! you just have to know you can find it AND be willing to ask for advice from coworkers, local organizations...etc. the buck never really stops with you, you're just helping to find the info...the most important part of the job is knowing your resources: electronic, print and human! no? sn
